Where Did the Word Sandwich Come from?
Glad you asked...
While meat between slices of bread was popular for a long time before him, the actual name "sandwich" came from the Earl of Sandwich. He ordered two slices of meat between bread so he could play cribbage and eat, and not get his fingers dirty from the holding the meat. Other people started ordering food "the same as Sandwich", and the name was shortened to sandwich. Rachel Ray calls it a 'sammy".
