Where Did Lawyers Come from?

At least one old joke would answer where did lawyers come from by giving an opening of dubious sanitation located between the waist and the knees. Probably, lawyers have been with us as long as trade, barter or contracts have been around. The term lawyer seems to date back to the 14th century. The vocation is much older since it simply means a person who has specialized knowledge in the areas of formalized standards of interactions.
